Characterful plastic monkey from the 1960s. This unique copy comes from the Antwerp cinema 'Metro' and was used as decoration during the premiere and performances of the first 'Planet of the Apes' in 1968. Also the proximity of the Antwerp Zoo was painted in this way.

Cinema Metro was located in the Antwerp station area, namely Anneessensstraat 22. After the former cinema was destroyed by a bomb during World War II, reconstruction work started in 1946. After the client had given up, the work was carried out by the American company Subway Goldwyn Mayer completed in 1947, hence the name 'Metro'. Afterwards, het was rebuilt several times.

The modernist natural stone facade dominated the street scene for years. Above the entrance hall was an awning with "METRO" written above it in large letters. Inside there was room for no less than 1650 seats.

After many years of showing blockbusters, the cinema closed its doors for good in 1993, after which the building was demolished.
